Most Christians kneel down to say their prayers. They are trying to be in touch with God. But if they are Christians, they know that what is prompting them to pray is also God on the inside. They also know the real knowledge of God comes through Christ, the Man who was God-that is standing beside them, helping them to pray.     Excerpt from "It's Prayer Time!" Book

Be BOLD, Face NOW Embrace Next See New

The Wandering Church

Rev. Dr. Leon C. Moore, Jr.

General Secretary of Evangelism and Missions

Throughout scripture, God reveals Godself as a God of purpose, direction, and divine intention. Nothing under heaven exists outside of God’s sovereign awareness. Yet, humanity has often struggled with remaining aligned with the will and direction of God. From the Garden of Eden to the modern sanctuary, people have wrestled with the temptation to chart their own course through life. The tragedy of wandering is not simply movement without direction, but movement without God at the center.

There are seasons in the life of every believer and every congregation when wandering becomes a spiritual reality. Wandering is more than physical movement; it is drifting slowly from conviction, calling, and kingdom assignment. It is possible for a Church to still gather weekly, maintain programs, and conduct services while slowly losing sight of its divine purpose. Churches can become busy yet spiritually misplaced. Activity does not always equal alignment.

The danger of wandering is subtle because it often happens gradually. One generation loses passion for prayer. Another loses urgency for evangelism. Over time, the Church can drift from mission into maintenance, from outreach into routine, and from transformation into tradition. The wandering Church becomes comfortable with movement but unfamiliar with meaningful direction.

The Old Testament provides a sobering picture of wandering through the experience of Israel in the wilderness. God delivered Israel from Egyptian bondage with the intention of leading them into the Promised Land. Yet because of fear, unbelief, and disobedience, an eleven-day journey became forty years of wandering.

 Scripture declares:

“And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.” — Numbers 14:33

Israel wandered not because God lacked direction, but because the people resisted His leadership. Their wandering became a consequence of losing trust in God’s promise. The same danger exists within the modern Church. Whenever the Church loses confidence in the power of God, the authority of scripture, or the urgency of the Gospel, it begins to wander spiritually.

Evangelism is often one of the first assignments abandoned by a wandering Church. A Church disconnected from evangelism eventually becomes disconnected from the heart of God. Jesus did not establish the Church merely to preserve tradition, but to seek and save the lost. The Church exists as a witness to the transforming power of Jesus Christ in the world.

In the New Testament, the writer of James gives both warning and hope concerning those who wander:

Scripture declares:

“Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” — James 5:19-20

This passage reminds us that wandering is not always final. There is still hope for restoration. God’s grace remains available to reclaim those who drift away. The mission of evangelism is not only reaching those outside the Church but also awakening those inside the Church who have wandered from truth, passion, and purpose.

The wandering Church must experience awakening. Awakening begins when the people of God recognize they have drifted and once again seek the voice of the Shepherd.

Evangelism becomes the evidence of renewed spiritual life because awakened people naturally desire to see others experience salvation and reconciliation with God.

The Church cannot afford to wander aimlessly, especially now in an age desperate for truth, hope, and healing. Communities are searching for answers, families are struggling for stability, and souls are longing for meaning. The Church must reclaim its assignment to proclaim the Gospel with clarity, compassion, and conviction.

God’s grace is what sustains us in wandering moments, but God’s purpose calls us beyond wandering into witness. The answer for the wandering Church is not merely better programs or larger crowds, but renewed commitment to God’s mission. When the Church returns to prayer, discipleship, and evangelism, it rediscovers both its direction and its destiny.

The hope of every wandering believer and every wandering Church is that God still calls, restores, and redirects God’s people. The Good Shepherd continues to seek those who drift. Through repentance, revival, and evangelism, the wandering Church can once again become a witnessing Church.

We are the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church recognizing the importance of Christ in our daily lives.

May 2026

Dear CME Family and Friends,

The Department of Lay Ministries, in partnership with the Connectional Young Adult Ministry, is excited to introduce one of our newest and most important Christian Community Service initiatives: A Day of Reading. This activity, beginning in May 2026, reflects our shared commitment to faith, literacy, and community engagement across the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

Through this initiative, we are inviting believers and communities throughout our great Zion to celebrate the power of reading and its ability to enrich minds, deepen faith, and strengthen connections.

The Day of Reading will encourage participation from churches, schools, libraries, book clubs, and community spaces as we lift up literacy as a vital tool for spiritual growth, personal development, and collective empowerment. This collaborative effort reflects the mission of the Department of Lay Ministries to strengthen and equip God’s people for meaningful service, and aligns with the Connectional Young Adult Ministry’s commitment to Christian service, leadership, and community outreach.

We look forward to the ways this initiative will inspire readers of all ages to grow, learn, and share in the transforming power of literature.

#GC2026 STRATEGIC PRAYER

#COUNTDOWN 73 DAYS APRIL 1- JUNE 12

Week 21 Affirmation ~  ~ Wounds, losses and fears are rooted in the past and often only reveal themselves through time and covenant relationships. These are the residues of history that establish our mindset and shape our decisions.   People's trust in a new allegiance is built by healing their wounds, redeeming their losses and conquering their fears. When we bring healing to their past, they begin to trust us. When they begin to trust us, we can candidly direct them toward placing their trust in God. Though we fail them, He never will.

Satan constantly rearranges his resources to maximize his effectiveness and to keep us off balance. Too often we apply old thinking and old methods to new problems and wonder why we're so ineffective. What prayer does is change our understanding of the situation. As we observe each situation and pray to God, He inspires us to rearrange our resources to resolve our problems. New thinking is required to discern and obtain the right tools and place them in the right hands. The Strategic Prayer Book

#GC2026 STRATEGIC PRAYER

#COUNTDOWN 73 DAYS APRIL 1- JUNE 12

Week 19 Affirmation ~ Complaining is yielding to and confessing our fear of defeat. Complaining feeds discontent and discontent breeds revolution. The intercessor must understand that wherever he hears consistent complaining, in that sphere, discontent and revolution are not far behind. Our prayer targets must reflect our faith in God and the victories He's already won. Don't neglect to prayerfully and faithfully choose God's promises. The Strategic Prayer Book

Thank you for your support as we launch this meaningful and impactful ministry opportunity.

#GC2026 STRATEGIC PRAYER

#COUNTDOWN 73 DAYS APRIL 1- JUNE 12

Week 17 Affirmation ~ It is far more prudent for corrupt leaders to deny the truth than to admit the truth that would depose them. To them, anything is preferable to admitting the existence of the One True God, intimately involved in the affairs of men, who will one day judge the living and the dead.  Strategic Prayer Book

Roots of Resilience: Black History Through the Eyes of Faith

is a transformative guide designed to empower churches and communities to teach Black History with confidence and conviction. At a time when public education struggles to preserve these vital narratives, this resource places the stories of Black Americans in the context of faith, resilience, and justice.

Grounded in biblical principles, Roots of Resilience connects historical struggles and triumphs to the ongoing call for equity and love in action. Readers, congregations, and small groups alike will discover how understanding the past can illuminate the path toward a better future.

#COUNTDOWN 73 DAYS APRIL 1- JUNE 12

Week 16 Affirmation ~ A worldview is not something you're born with. It grows and develops as you grow in knowledge and experience that corresponds with life. Knowledge that corresponds with your experience is accepted into your worldview. Knowledge that contradicts your experience or your current worldview is rejected. Experience and knowledge are two battlegrounds the enemy craves to possess, so keep your mind stayed on God and He will keep you in perfect peace.  Strategic Prayer Book
